Family-Centered Treatment for Children and Adolescents
If you child or teen has an eating disorder, you're terrified. The anxiety of not knowing where to turn or what to do is overwhelming. Something that "works" one day, may not work the next. You need all the information and support you can get.
I work with parents and other caregivers to equip you with the tools you need to help your child recover from an eating disorder. I can help you to troubleshoot mealtime, understand your child's complicated emotions, and even help you with what to say and when so that you can be the best possible support you can be.
I've worked with kids as young as 10 with feeding and eating issues utilizing play therapy techniques as well as parent guidance.
Older kids and teens often appreciate my sense of humor and comfort with the many issues faced by this age group: friend drama, school anxiety, substance abuse, self-harm, and sexuality, to name a few.
I believe that parents play a crucial role in recovery and that they need all the support they can get in order to help their child. I include families as much as possible in treatment and help you to utilize your strengths as a parent in the best way possible.
Access to the right treatment is a crucial component of recovery from an eating disorder. For many, simply living in a rural area can mean that expert help is out of reach. While most towns have a few therapists, it is unlikely that any of them specialize in eating disorders. For that reason, I decided to make it my mission to improve access to eating disorder treatment in rural areas.
Students who go away to college, professionals who travel for work, and people with chronic health conditions are among those who also benefit from online sessions.
I provide therapy online to residents of Connecticut and New York using a HIPAA-Compliant platform called Zoom that is similar to Skype. Zoom is free and simple to use - no tech expertise needed!
Walk and Talk Therapy
Break free from the therapy couch! "Walk and talk" therapy can help you to heal your relationship with exercise while engaging in therapy in a totally new way. Walk and Talk sessions are held at Congers Lake, Rockland Lake, or even around your own neighborhood.
Meal Support Therapy
Mealtime can be one of the most stressful times of day for a person with an eating disorder. I offer meal support sessions in your home, in restaurants, or in my office to help you to meet your meal plan goals, reduce anxiety around certain foods and situations, and develop greater comfort with social eating.
I also provide mealtime coaching to parents to help them to support their child in his or her recovery and to make dinner time a less stressful experience for all.
Treatment Navigation: Helping You Find The Right Help
If you or your child needs residential, inpatient, or intensive treatment for an eating disorder, substance abuse, or mental health issue, the time to act is now. Delaying admission can be life threatening. I understand that finding the right program can be overwhelming. You need to find a program that you can trust, and one that will meet your needs. You might have worries about sending your son or daughter to a place you've never seen, and want to know if it's a program that can really help.
Finding a program that accepts your insurance, works with people of your age or gender, and is located in a place you're comfortable traveling to is just the start. Many of my clients also need a program that will accommodate a specific dietary or health issue, observes their religious practices, treats multiple issues, and much more. This can make the process of finding a program stressful and confusing, during an already difficult time. Let me help you simplify the process and guide you through every step.
I have relationships with treatment centers across the US and can help you to find the one that suits you best. This service begins with a comprehensive assessment to determine which level of care may be most appropriate. During the assessment, I will ask about your needs and requests and will provide you with information on recommended programs.
I walk you through the admissions process and communicate with the program's staff to ensure a smooth transition into a treatment program. Throughout your stay, I'm available for ongoing communication with you and the program's treatment team to ensure that your needs are being met. I take the stress out of the process so that you and your family can focus on what is most important: recovery.
