What is Bulimia Nervosa?
Bulimia Nervosa, sometimes referred to as Bulimia, is a serious and life-threatening eating disorder. Bulimia can develop at any age. Like all eating disorders, Bulimia is not usually caused by any one thing. Usually, it develops from a complex combination of genetics and life experiences.
People who have Bulimia may struggle with episodes of binge eating, followed by engaging in behaviors that they believe will interfere with digestion or prevent weight gain. People need to know that these behaviors are very dangerous and can cause serious health problems or even death.
What Health Problems Can Bulimia Cause?
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, people who have Bulimia are at risk for cardiac arrest, stomach rupture, tooth decay and tooth loss, and a number of other serious health complications. If you have Bulimia Nervosa or if you engage in any of the behaviors associated with it, it is important to see your doctor or seek medical help.
People who have Bulimia sometimes describe feeling out of control, as well as feeling shame, guilt, and embarrassment. They often try to hide what is happening from people around them. People who have Bulimia often struggle with depression, anxiety, and isolation. Sometimes they feel trapped, or describe feeling like “there is no way out.” It is important for people with Bulimia to know that help is available, and that they can recover.
